Original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite photo, stamped on the reverse, “Collection of Americana Frederick H. Meserve, 268 Edgecome Avenue, New York City,” signed in the lower border in blue ink, “Charles E. Hughes, Dec. 15, 1929.” In fine condition. Meserve was a New York textile executive, book lover, and authority on Lincolniana. He has been called America's first great photograph collector. The photo is accompanied by a letter signed by the governor’s secretary, complying with the request that governor sign the portrait.
