ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 6.5, personal letterhead, April 8, 1934. In part: “I have been forced since coming to Washington to refuse nearly all requests of the kind embodied in your letter, and exceptions are embarrassing. Perhaps I might feel free to make one if you are planning to republish what was written years ago, and if my letter is not given special emphasis or prominence. Perhaps you will be able to give me some idea of its setting and environment.” In very good condition, with scattered wrinkles and soiling, a paperclip impression at the top of the page, and a fold touching the first letter of his signature.
