An exceptional coffee, an exceptional history!
Indonesia was colonized at the beginning of the 18th century by the Dutch. The latter created plantations of Arabica coffeecoming from Yemen. At the time, the colonizers did forbid the indigenous slaves to consume the coffee that they picked.
At the same time, a small mammal, the luwak, was hunted because of the damage it did to the coffee plants by eating its best cherries. The natives realized that the luwak did not digest the pulp of the fruit, thus leaving the bean intact. They picked it up, torrefied it in secret and discovered… extraordinary aromas of lightly roasted hazelnuts and of dark chocolate which will create the desire of their colonizers! Even in those days this coffee was very expensive because of its long process of production and its rarity.
We are given the chance now to appreciate the particular flavours of this coffee and to savour the unique taste of the Kopi Luwak.
