This is an absolutely stunning and quite large sarcophagus panel dating to the Roman Empire, circa 1st to 3rd centuries A.D. Made of solid lead and decorated in relief with a central scene depicting a head of Medusa surrounded by leaping dolphins and foliate motifs, the two scenes on either side depicting a couchant sphinx surrounded by branching leaves and foliate motifs, Corinthian columns separating the scenes, a band of laurel above. Measuring a large 30-3/4" long by 14" high, it is fragmented as shown, but still quite a wonderful display piece! Mounted on a solid steel base designed to be displayed upon a wall. Ex private Arizona collection. The opposite side sold at Sotheby, New York, June 14,2000, lot 226 for $12,000. A remarkable example of Roman art and metal work!
