Ghiyath Shah as heir apparent, Gold 1/4 Tanka, 2.70g, AH 861?, Arabic legend on both sides, Obv: “Ghiyath Shah Sultani” with AH date in numbers below, Rev: “al- Sultan bin al-Sultān Wali Ahd” (Not listed in G&G).
At some stage during the reign of his father, Ghiyāth, Maḥmūd’s eldest son, was designated heir apparent and allowed to strike coins in his own name. He must also have been given an important role in the management of the state while his father was away on campaign. The earliest coins with a clear date were struck in the year 861.
