Bahman Shah ascended the throne at Daulatabad on advice of Nasir al-Din Isma’il Shah in 1347. Soon after his ascension he conquered Bidar and then Kalyani. When the news of the capture of Kalyani reached his capital Daulatabad, he became so overjoyed that he changed the name of Daulatabad to ‘Fathabad’. But this change of name was short lived, because soon afterwards he moved his capital to Gulbarga which he named ‘Ahsanabad’ after himself.
