Ala al-din Mujahid Shah, Silver 1/6th Tanka, 1.50g, Obv: Arabic legend “Abu al-Mughazi Mujahid Shah”, Rev: Arabic legend “Shah Shari’at Panah” (G&G# BH48 Plate Specimen). One test mark either side otherwise very fine, exceedingly rare.
Sultan Muhammad I Bahmani died in 1375 and was succeeded by his son, Mujāhid, a well-educated man of considerable size and strength. Most of his short reign was spent in the wars with Vijayanagar. Before he could achieve anything of note, he was murdered in his tent while returning from a campaign.
This coin remains unique and was illustrated in G&G. However they could not read the reverse legend. That is restored to ‘Shah Shari’at Panah’. Mujahid obviously regarded himself as the one seeking refuge with Islamic ‘law of God’.
