Sullivan's Travels (Paramount, 1941). Lobby Card (11" X 14"). Writer-director-comic-genius Preston Sturges turns his incisive wit on the disparate worlds of Hollywood and depression-era America. When filmmaker John Sullivan (Joel McCrea) wants to make a film with more social relevance than "Ants in Your Plants of 1939," he settles upon the prestige picture for the common man, "Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou?" He hits the road, but only after finally discarding his entourage does he experience the real-life travails of most Americans. The Girl (Veronica Lake), a failed actress, turns his life around, but a series of tragedies, accidents and a case of mistaken identity keep him from The Girl and the industry and force him to confront poverty, prison life and even death first-hand. This lobby card is one of the best of the set, with a beautiful Lake posing and hardly betraying her coming pregnancy. A few abrasions and dirt smudges appear in the image area, and the color has slightly faded and the border shows staining, with a couple of spots of paper loss. Very Good/Fine.
