Sugar Lot (Lot of 8) WWI Posters Sugar Lot
Sugar Lot (Lot of 8) This lot features eight posters which promote the rationing and saving of sugar and sugar based products. Sugar was a luxury that many American's had enjoyed without any concern for supply or quantity. A man once said, "Give me the luxuries and I will dispense with the necessities." Many people people believed that rationing sugar was harder than doing so with wheat and fats. This is probably why there were so many posters printed by the Food Administration which entreated Americans to ration and save sugar and sugar products; some even going so far as to list actual amounts as the allotted amount per month per person. During the war people were encouraged to use honey, molasses, corn syrup, and maple sugar. This was a concern because the ships that were used to transport sugar to America, were needed to transport troops and supplies for the war. No extra ships could be spared for luxuries, so Americans had to ration and save! These eight posters depict the struggles Americans went through to save and send sugar over seas. A must have in any collection! The lot includes, "Sugar-Save It" x2 (20" x 14"); "Sugar Means Ships" x4 (16" x 19"); and "Your Sugar Ration Is..." (20"x 15"). The "Sugar Means Ships" poster is well-drawn and depicts a wonderful image of a young girl drinking a sweetened drink from a straw, as she does so, she is also sucking up the ships and dragging them away from the European shore and the soldiers and citizens who so desperately need them. A wonderful image in black and white which was seen by every American during this time.
