Sturgis, KY - $20 1902 Date Back Fr. 642 The First NB Ch. # (S)6244
One of the joys of cataloguing a collection as exciting as the Gale holdings is the prospect of surprises as the job is tackled. There was certainly a pleasant shock at coming across this unique item, which is another bank and town that Glenn Martin never was able to capture in more than three decades of searching. This was the sole bank in Sturgis, a town of perhaps 2000 people in western Kentucky a few miles inland from the Ohio River. Chartered in 1902, it issued Red Seals and Date Backs only before the liquidators arrived in August of 1916 to close the doors forever. Bill obtained this note privately some years ago, and this offering marks the first time any note from here has ever been available at public sale to the collecting fraternity. Fine, with just a bit of fraying at the top, which is more than offset by the oversize pen signatures. Hard to estimate, but where can another note be obtained from this unique bank at any price?
