Studio-made Blunderbuss from a US Springfield trapdoor rifle, #329816 used by John Wayne in promotions for his first epic Western, “The Big Trail”. This prop gun, previously in the Western Costume Company armory, is in untouched as-modified condition showing a dark brown patina on the metal surfaces, good action, scattered areas of uncleaned rust, approx. 7” brass flange on muzzle to simulate a blunderbuss barrel with heavy patina and scattered traces of black paint; wood stock is well-worn, dry and showing numerous nicks, mars scratches, cracks and repairs including brass wire wrapping at the wrist for visual effect, a replaced butt plate and replaced brass trigger guard, possibly from another antique rifle in the Studio’s armory. Little John’s previously handled the sale of the Stembridge Armory collection where record prices were obtained for many famous movie prop guns. This item certainly rivals the popularity of Western guns pursued by our customers in that sale and is worthy of the same level of attention today. Also included is an authenticating letter from the purchaser of Western Costume Co. and copies of period display advertising for the epic motion picture “The Long Trail”. Est.: $5,000-$15,000++.
