20thc oil on stretched canvas, study of the 1896 John William Waterhouse original "Hylas and the Nymphs", depicting a moment from the Greek & Roman legend of the tragic youth Hylas, based on accounts by Ovid & other ancient writers, in which the enraptured Hylas is abducted by Naiads ( female water nymphs ) while seeking drinking water. John William Waterhouse RA ( 1849 – 1917 ) was an English painter known for working first in the Academic style and for then embracing the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood's style & subject matter. His artworks were known for their depictions of women from both ancient Greek mythology & Arthurian legend. 24" X 36" stretched oil on canvas painting. Signed on the reverse, R.
