Stuart Morle (b.1960) PORTRAIT OF DESMOND O’MALLEY, PD signed, inscribed and dated [2004] on reverse oil on canvas laid on board 36 by 25cm., 14 by 10in. Irish politician and founder of the Progressive Democrats, Desmond O’Malley was born in Limerick in 1939 and educated at UCD. He was elected to the Dáil in 1968 as a Fianna Fáil TD, and held a succession of Cabinet Ministries, notably Justice (1970-1973) and Industry and Commerce (1977-1982). After a number of challenges to Charles Haughey’s leadership, O’Malley resigned from Cabinet in 1982 and three years later formed his own party, the Progressive Democrats, which he led until retirement in 1993. Dublin-based artist Stuart Morle was commissioned by the Progressive Democrats to paint a portrait of Desmond O’Malley in 2004. The portrait now hangs in the party’s headquarters in South Frederick Street, Dublin.
