Both photos on these postcards were taken by the Mattson Studio in Rapid City, South Dakota. The 1930s Stratobowl balloon launches near Rapid City, South Dakota, were groundbreaking high-altitude scientific missions conducted in 1934 and 1935 by the U.S. Army Air Corps and National Geographic Society. Using giant helium balloons, the Explorer I and Explorer II flights aimed to study the upper atmosphere and test human survival at extreme altitudes. The 1935 flight reached about 72,000 feet, setting a world record and providing early observations of Earth’s curvature. These highly publicized launches drew large crowds and marked a major step toward modern aviation and space exploration.
