Store Front Photograph
Card mounted photo of two women and four men standing in front of Murphy's Store. The store appears to be selling garments, umbrellas and bolts of fabric. A sign listing fabric at 25 cents a yard is at right. At center in the doorway are bolts stacked up with a sign: "Dress Ginghams 6c per yard. The back of the card has the following pencil written inscription "Cherokee-now Tylernear North Calumne [sic] Hill Nevada County, Calif. (Ghost Town now) early 70's." Good focus and contrast with some minor scratches. 4.25" x 6." The town dates back to the 1850s and lies in Butte County. It was known for its reserves of gold. It was named after the Cherokee Indians who lived in the area prior to its gold rush. Welsh miners came to the area in the 1850s and built the town up.
