Civil Rights activist (1941–1998) who rose to prominence in Black Power movement. Signed book: Black Power. Later printing. NY: Vintage Books, 1967. Paperback, 4.25 x 7.25, 198 pages. Signed on the half-title page in black ballpoint, “For the liberation of all oppressed people, Stokely Carmichael.” In fine condition, with a mild shade of uniform toning to inside pages. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from the original recipient which reads, in part, “I obtained this signed book in person, Feb-Apr, 1973. He spoke at my Black History class. He signed two items per person.” After picking the cautious Carmichael up at the San Francisco Airport—traveling in disguise and requesting a van as transportation, to ensure his safety at a time when death threats were commonplace—the consignor notes that he drove him to DeAnza College in Cupertino, California, where he spent the next few days speaking to classes.
