Henry C. Bowen (born 1813 ). Merchant, Abolitionist, Publisher of the prominent anti-slavery paper Independent. As a young man, Bowen worked for Arthur Tappan who, along with his brother abolitionist Lewis Tappan, brought him into the abolitionist movement. Bowen Co-founded the Independent, eventually taking over sole control of the paper. The independent was a strong voice for the anti-slavery movement and boasted many of the period’s leading abolitionist as contributing writers such as Henry Ward Beecher and William Lloyd Garrison. At the time of the passage of the fugitive slave act, Bowen’s mercantile firm refused to sign the Castle Garden agreement supporting the act stating that his firm had its “goods and not its principles for sale”. Stock certificate dated March 19, 1881 for 953 shares of the Northern Pacific Railroad issued to and signed on verso by Bowen. Engraved vignette of a steam locomotive at top center and a portrait of Frederick Billings at bottom. The certificate is lightly punch and pen cancelled. Bowen’s signature remains bold and uncancelled. An interesting abolitionist autograph on a stock.
