Stock Certificate “Army & Navy Escutcheon Co.
Stock Certificate for the “Army and Navy Escutcheon Company”. 12.5” x 9.75”, printed in Philadelphia by Reen & Trump lithographers, dated on the face June 7, 1880, signed by John P. Nicholson (later to be the chairman of the Gettysburg National Park Commission), battle scene vignette flanked by escutcheons for General Grant and Admiral David Farragut, with a border of Civil War corps badges, with the usual endorsements on the verso, with several uniform fold creases, slight toning to paper, else very good condition. Shortly after the Civil War escutcheons, a lithographed artistic rendering featuring a shield design with portions designated to the veterans’ ranks, units, positions and the battles in which they participated, became quite popular as a way for veterans to graphically commemorate their service in the war. Several companies sprang forth to provide these custom made souvenirs and most went out of business just as quickly. The specimen on offer has an autograph note dated June 20, 1912 which indicates that the Army and Navy Escutcheon Company had gone into receivership years before and the stock was therefore “absolutely worthless”. Ex.
