The No. 49 target rifle was made from 1896 to 1916. The factory replacement, re-rifled heavy barrel is marked "J. STEVENS A. & T. Co. / CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS. U.S.A." upside down on the right rear flat and "22. L.R." on the left rear (barrel gauges at .25 caliber). The serial number is marked on the lower tang. The barrel is numbered "11256" just ahead of the forearm and is equipped with a globe front sight, has two scope mount bases on the top flat, no cutouts/seats for a rear sight and has a short range tang mounted vernier peep sight. The barrel and hammer are finished blue with the remaining surfaces casehardened. The lever is the full loop type with double set triggers. Standard scroll engraved receiver and mounted with nicely figured, high grade checkered American walnut Schnabel forearm with a walnut palm rest, with blue shaft and nickel mounting base, and Schuetzen style buttstock with high comb, cheekpiece, perch belly and a nickel plated Swiss style iron buttplate.

Condition: Very fine. The barrel retains 95% original blue finish with a couple of tool marks on the breech end a couple a small areas of minor spotting and overall light handling marks. Most of the original case colors remain on the receiver with areas of smooth silver gray patina. The lever retains original case colors in protected areas with the balance having a smooth silver gray patina. The buttplate retains 99% plus replated chrome finish. The forearm is very good with scattered minor dents, scratches and very crisp checkering. The markings and engraving are sharp. The action is fine. The current chamber appears to be a 25-20SS.
