From the John Coffee Hays, Applewhite-Clark Collection. Stephen Fuller Austin (November 3, 1793–December 27, 1836) Daguerreotype from a painting of Steven F. Austin, Founder of The Republic of Texas, Known as the "Father of Texas" The Texas Rangers were unofficially created by Stephen F. Austin in a call-to-arms written in 1823, announced he would supplement the Mexican government’s militia patrols with his own force of ten men, whom he paid out of his own pocket to protect his newly arrived settlers. He led the second and, ultimately successful Anglo Texan colonization of the region by bringing 300 families and their slaves from the United States to the Tejas region of Mexico in 1825. 1/6 plate, 2.75" x 3.25", Late 1840's framing and case.
