McQueen’s Screen Actors Guild Junior Membership card for 1956-57, 3.5 x 25, issued from the Hollywood branch on Sunset Boulevard. McQueen’s name and number are typed on the card, which is then signed in black ink, “Steve T. McQueen,” who then adds his Social Security number under his signature. Card also bears a printed signature of the Guild’s executive secretary. In fine condition, with several mild creases, stamp to blank left edge, a bit of mild soiling, and pencil notation on reverse.

Hollywood’s ‘anti-hero’ was just starting out when he used this membership card to find gainful employment in bit performances on The United States Steel Hour, The 20th Century-Fox Hour, and a two-part Studio One episode entitled ‘The Defender.’ It was that last performance that caught the attention of studio executives who were casting the now-classic science-fiction film, The Blob. Though film representatives were impressed by his Broadway performance in A Hatful of Rain, catching the actor in the small screen role one evening convinced them that he was right for the role—something that helped launch McQueen’s career. This SAG card is the first issued to the Hollywood legend as he took his first steps in front of the camera.
