<B>Steve Ditko - Amazing Spider-Man #23, page 8 Original Art (Marvel, 1965).</B></I> The spectacular Spider-Man and the gravity-defying Green Goblin -- few pieces of Sturdy Steve Ditko art can top this electrifying chase scene from "The Goblin and the Gangsters." The consignor of this piece bought this beautiful page for the princely sum of $8 at the 1969 New York City comic convention, a mere four years after it was drawn, and only three years after Ditko had left the title. The Green Goblin proved such a powerful supervillain, he even led to the break-up the real-life team of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. John Romita Sr. recalls one of the reasons why Ditko may have left Marvel, "From what I've gathered -- and this is second-hand information, because I never asked Steve this -- he wanted the Green Goblin to be someone unknown, and his theory was sensible. This is the reason Stan and he disagreed a lot. Ditko had a feeling that more real life should be put into the strips, and I thought he was a pioneer that way. He wanted politics in the strip, he wanted sociological upheaval in the strip. He wanted all this stuff to look real, and he said, 'In real life, if there's a masked criminal, and you unmask him, ninety-nine times out of one-hundred it's going to be someone you never know.' And Stan said, 'What are you talking about? We're not doing real life here -- this is a guy who crawls on walls.'" Ditko left and the Green Goblin was revealed to be the well-known supporting character, Norman Osborn. The bidding on this page is sure to be spirited since Spider-Man appears in six panels and puts on an awesome display of his wall-crawling powers, using his spider-speed to run across walls and stick to a water tower. Meanwhile, the Green Goblin shows what he can do with his Goblin Glider and pumpkin bombs. All in all, this is a Marvel masterwork, and it has been framed to an overall size of 15" x 22".
