American, ca 1912, struck for R. Wallace & Sons Mfg. Co., Wallingford, Connecticut. A two-handled sterling trophy engraved Presented to / Aviator Korn / by / First Woman Passenger / Hazel M. Bloom / Oct 8, '12. Marked sterling/1251; 5.5" high.

The Korn brothers, (Milton and Ed) of Shelby County, Ohio, were inspired by the Wright Brothers' first flight at Kitty Hawk. As early as 1908, Milton built a working model powered by rubber bands. Together with his brother Ed, the Korns built a full-sized machine powered by oil and gasoline; after several models, they succeeded in sustained flight in 1911. The Korn brothers' careers as aviators ended tragically in 1913 when Milton was killed and Ed severely injured.

The specific event to which this trophy refers is unknown. At this point, the Korns had achieved success as pioneering pilots, and were flying a Benoist Type XII. Today they are recognized as pioneers in the field of aerial photography, and purportedly, were the first to take self-portraits while flying. A fine trophy.
