American writer (1898–1943) best known for his stories 'The Devil and Daniel Webster' and 'By the Waters of Babylon' and for the novel John Brown's Body, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1929. Autograph poem on an off-white 5 x 6.75 sheet of his personal letterhead, signed at the conclusion in fountain pen, "Stephen Vincent Benet." Benet quotes from his poem 'The Mountain Whippoorwill,' in full: "Up in the mountains, its lonesome all the time / (Soft wind slein' thru' the sweet-potato vine) / Up in the mountains, its lonesome for a child / Whippoorwills a-callin', when the sap runs wild." In fine condition, with light edge toning. Accompanied by a small unsigned press photo.
