American writer (1898–1943) best known for his stories ‘The Devil and Daniel Webster’ and ‘By the Waters of Babylon’ and for the novel ‘John Brown’s Body,’ which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1929. He was awarded a posthumous Pulitzer in 1944 for his unfinished poem ‘Western Star.’ Partial TLS, personal letterhead, 5.5 x 6.75, no date. The final page of a letter to an unknown recipient. In part: “I’d rather not appear in person at the Town Hall, if you don’t mind…. You see, I don’t feel my personality has much important—if the writing is relatively all right, that is all I can ask for….” In fine, clean condition.
