Audrey Maria Charlotte Bruce was the granddaughter of the Dublin barrister and
landowner, George Woods Maunsell of 10 Merrion Square South, who held extensive
tracts of land in counties Dublin and Westmeath in the mid-nineteenth century.
Audrey’s father was one Al(l)an Cameron Bruce-Pryce of Duffryn, St Nicholas,
Glamorganshire. The family later moved to Monknash, also in Glamorganshire, and
A. C. Bruce-Pryce is recorded there in Slater’s Commercial Directory of 1880 as
being "lord of the manor and principal landowner of the soil". In 1891 Catterson
Smith painted at least three of the Bruce-Pryce children, with portraits of
Audrey’s brothers Alan and Edward being exhibited at the RHA the following year.
Catterson Smith’s father, also named Stephen, had been President of the RHA and
a fashionable Dublin portrait artist. His son studied under him and on his
father’s death succeeded to the majority of his business. The present work is in
a handcarved and pierced, giltwood, Venetian frame.
