Stella Steyn (1907-1987)
STILL LIFE WITH PEACHES AND MIXED FLOWERS
oil on board
51 by 61cm., 20 by 24in.
Provenance:
Acquired directly from the artist by the previous owner
Said to be the only Irish artist to have studied and worked at the Bauhaus in Germany, Stella Steyn’s mature style owed little to prevalent artistic trends. Born in Dublin she attended the DMSA from 1925-1926, leaving to further her artistic training in Paris at La Grande Chaumière. She was selected for numerous group exhibitions including the RHA and the 1929 Contemporary Irish Art exhibition in New York. In Paris she became a friend and collaborator of James Joyce’s, illustrating a serial instalment of his Finnegan’s Wake, and was briefly courted by Samuel Beckett. Upon marriage, she settled in England in 1938. Her subject matter henceforth developed into her most recognisable body of work: the rag-doll figures of women and her eccentrically arranged and lightly painted flower-pieces. Examples of these can be found in many collections including the British Museum, the Ulster Museum, the National Self Portrait Collection in Limerick and the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin.
