First edition, first printing of ''The Grapes of Wrath'' by John Steinbeck. New York: The Viking Press: 1939. Steinbeck's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel follows a family of destitute, Depression-era Oklahoma sharecroppers forced to abandon their homes in search of a better life in California. After its publication, the novel was attacked by some, and it has been called ''the most thoroughly discussed novel - in criticism, reviews, and college classrooms - of twentieth century American literature.'' Accompanied by original dustjacket. Meets all first printing points: copyright page reads ''First Published in 1939''; dustjacket, unique to the first edition, shows $2.75 price at top right corner of front flap and ''First Edition'' at bottom right corner. Dustjacket shows mild toning, light overall edgewear and some paper loss to edges of backstrip; otherwise a remarkably clean, still-bright jacket in excellent condition. Book's ffep contains a blind stamp of the prior owner ''Milton L. Miller.'' Book is in near fine condition.
