Steer Horn Powder Flask Collection c. 1860-70s
For your consideration are two Civil War era steer horn powder flasks circa 1860-70s. There are two flasks in this collection with the first showing a darker color and simple geometric engravings throughout. The powder was held in the horn and could be sealed with the wood stopper. The horn features a small twine string acting as a shoulder strap. The second is a much smaller steer horn powder flask and shows no engravings. It has a lighter beige color through the thicker part of the horn and turns to a black color towards the tip. It has metal rivets around the base to hold its wood cap in place, while the tip shows a carved out area for the shoulder strap to sit in as well as a wood cork to hold the powder within the horn. The condition of this pair of powder horns is good with no obvious signs of damage and shows good overall condition. The larger powder horn measures 12 1/4" L x 3 1/2" W, while the smaller one measures 5 1/4" L x 2 1/4" W. The two powder horns have a collective weight of 11 ounces.
