6t - Steel Engraving of Philip Kearny from the N. Y. Studio of Matthew Brady. This steel engraving can be seen in “Battles of America by Sea and Land” Volume III, c1878. The engraving is not taken from that book; this work is larger, 8 15/16” x 11 7/16”. There are three similar others in this auction. It is from an ambrotype by Matthew Brady expressly for this work. Philip Kearny, 1815 – 1862 was a United States Army officer. He was noted for his leadership in the Mexican-American War and the American civil War but was killed in the 1862 at the Battle of Chantilly, engraved under the photo. Condition is very good; there are easily removed notations in pencil at the bottom.
All measurements are approx.
