<B>Steamer </B></I><B><I>Galveston</B></I></B></I><B> Stock Certificate</B></I> signed "<I>J.T. Harrell</B></I>" as Proprietor, one page, 8" x 5.25". Galveston, ______ 18 [no date]. Noted at bottom: "<I>Printed at the 'NEWS' Office, Galveston</B></I>." See Jenkins, Printer in Three Republics 452, where he states that Samuel Bangs printed the Galveston<I> Daily News</B></I> during 1842. Jenkins commented that he knew of no other copy in existence of this imprint, and no other stock certificate for a Texas naval vessel. Printed stock certificate with ornate typographical border, numbered "<I>24</B></I>" in manuscript. "<I>One Share/$100/Certificate of Stock/in the/Steamer Galveston: Capital, Seven Thousand Dollars-70 Shares, 100 Dollars Each. This Certificate entitles _______ to one Share of Stock in the Steamer Galveston:/the original Proprietor being Josiah T. Harrell, who, hereby, for himself, his Heirs, &c., warrants and defends the Title to the same to the said _______, his Heirs or Assigns. This Certificate shall be transferable by assignment, in writing, on the back hereof.</B></I>" Except for the number, the certificate is not filled in. Docketed on verso: "<I>Filed in court on/the 7th July 1854/Thos G. Masterson/clk.</B></I>" <B>Thomas G. Masterson</B></I> came to Texas from Tennessee in 1832 and bought land on the Brazos River near Velasco. A lawyer and partner in a mercantile business, Masterson held five separate mail contracts from March 1844 to April 1845. In a report from Pensacola, Florida, dated April 15, 1861, Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg reported to Secretary of War LeRoy P. Walker "Mail steamer Galveston from New Orleans this morning. I have taken possession of her." Masterson served as County Clerk and Chief Justice of Brazoria County and was enrolling officer of the district during the Civil War. In the 1840s, <B>Josiah T. Harrell</B></I> served as Associate Justice of the Harris County Court. Plastic tape at top edge, visible on both sides, touches "<I>on</B></I>" of Masterson's signature.
