Steamboat Bill, Jr. (United Artists, 1928).
Steamboat Bill, Jr. (United Artists, 1928). Title Lobby Card (11" X 14"). During the hurricane which climaxes "Steamboat Bill, Jr.," Keaton is caught in the furious wind sweeping through his small town. He is blown hither and yon as buildings and livestock fly through the air all around him. Eventually, he ends up standing in front of a two-story house on the verge of collapse. Suddenly, the front facade topples straight down on Keaton. But he's unharmed because he's standing in the upper-story window opening. It's a scary moment, but as soon as it happens, we start to laugh. It is funny and terrifying at the same time. This was a real wall and Keaton certainly would have been crushed to death if he'd been standing an inch to the left or right. No wonder the cameraman covered his eyes during the one-take shot. Keaton, of course, stands stone-faced throughout and runs away to his next pratfall. This was the charm of Keaton, the acknowledged genius of silent cinema. Offered in this lot is the title lobby card to his masterpiece, "Steamboat Bill, Jr." This card has tanned down to the lower two inches of the card and then the card is significantly whiter. Most likely something covered the bottom two inches of the cards for some years leaving the upper portion of the card exposed to dust. There is slight corner rounding. Very Fine.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
