Montgomery Improvement Association's printed statement, dated 14 November 1956 and written in response to the Supreme Court declaring segregation unconstitutional in response to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Reads in part: ''...the Supreme Court of this nation affirmed that segregation is unconstitutional in public transportation...This decision came to all of us as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of enforced segregation...All of us have a basic responsibility to seek to implement this noble decision. Let all of us be calm and reasonable...'' One page typed document measures 8.5'' x 11''. Minor toning and foxing and a pencil notation ''King's Statement'' along right edge. Very good. From the collection of Maude Ballou, Martin Luther King Jr.'s close friend and personal secretary.
