Starr Arms Civil War Breech Loading Percussion Carbine with Brass Tack Stock Decoration

This is an example of one of approximately 20,600 percussion carbines produced by Starr Arms Company of Yonkers, New York circa 1862 to 1865. The consignor notes state this was an early Sioux Indian captured carbine and was taken west by an Indian scout and decorated with this artistic tack work. The lock is marked "STARR ARMS CO./YONKERS, N.Y." and the upper tang is marked "STARRS PATENT/SEPT. 14TH 1858" directly behind the hammer. The top of the barrel in front of the rear sight is marked "STARR ARMS CO YONKERS N.Y.", with the matching serial number appearing on the bottom of the barrel under the forearm and right side of the locking block. Mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with decorative tack work on the stock and a tack on either side of the forearm ahead of the receiver.

Fair. The metal surfaces have a smooth brown patina. The wood has a pieced in repair on the top of the wrist on both sides and a pieced in repair on the lower left side of the wrist. "DAH" is crudely period punch dotted into the right side of the stock and there are a few minor cracks on the stock toe. Overall there are a few minor gouges, and scattered dents, dings and scratches. The markings are clear. The action functions well.
