Star Trek Next Generation Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) Screen Used VISOR
A truly rare Star Trek: The Next Generation collectable. From earlier seasons of “Star Trek – The Next Generation” (circa 1988), this is one of Lt. Commander Geordi La Froge's (LeVar Burton) actual iconic screen used VISOR. Starting as a helmsman on the USS Enterprise-D, La Forge (whose character name came from Gene Roddenberry, who used it in honor of a very loyal young disabled fan who died in 1975), moved up to the rank of chief engineer. La Forge was born blind, and wears a VISOR (Visual Instrument and Sensory Organ Replacement). The VISOR helps him see, however it doesn't allow him to see "natural sight". It works by scanning the electromagnetic spectrum then processing the light into "digital" visual input which is then transmitted to his brain. Therefore he sees basically infrared imagery. Ironically, the actor Burton used to complain when wearing the VISOR, which of course was supposed to make his blind character see, since the vertical bars cut out virtually all vision, causing him to bump into things on the set! At least that was the case in the first few seasons until he both got somewhat used to them, and some adjustments were made to the VISOR. This is the lighter earlier aluminum version. Later versions were much heavier, and would slip off his head, so actual screws were installed at the temples, and literally screwed against the surface of his skin to keep them on, which caused pain and headaches for Burton. As said, this screen used VISOR is made of aluminum with wood framing inside, and includes the circular "input patches" at the temples. Luckily for Burton, special "ocular prosthetic implants" were devised to be installed directly into his eyes, (actually custom hand painted contact lenses), beginning with "Star Trek: First Contact" (1996), so he was finally able to leave the famous VISOR behind. (Approx 6" x 5" x 1") Crew members and independent collectors have verified the authenticity of this item. Comes with a COA from Premiere Props.
