Star Mining Co. Gold Transport Ingot. According t
Star Mining Co. Gold Transport Ingot. According to the April 1980 NASCA catalog, which featured six Star Mining Co. ingots, there were three firms with this name in existence in 1880. The problem has been which one actually produced ingots. Like the F. G. Hoard ingot above, these ingots first surfaced in a 1969 Glendining Sale, and were found by a treasure hunter with a metal detector. While little is actually known about Star Mining Co., a great deal has been speculated. Several years ago, Fred Holabird debunked a modern forgery made with machine engraving. However, this particular piece appears to be consistent with other ingots with hand-punched devices that were used by other Western assayers. This small, rectangular ingot has the following inscriptions on three lines: OZS 4.55 FINE 995 / CAL. <S 1880 / No MINING Co 429. The star device is especially interesting as it is striated in two directions on each point with diagonals in the center. Numerous small to medium sized contact marks are peppered over each side.
From The Alan Bingel Collection.
