Offered in this lot is a Vintage Star Lock Works Scandinavian (Polhem) Padlock, circa mid to late 1800s. Around the 1850s, "Scandinavian" style locks, or "Polhem locks", invented by the Swedish inventor Christopher Polhem, became a more secure alternative to the prevailing smokehouse and screw locks. Conrad Liebrich, a German immigrant, founded the Star Lock Works of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1836. When he retired in 1869, his partners kept the name Star Lock Works. The company continued until 1926. Star Lock Works are identifiable by the star around the keyhole. The mechanism functions as intended, unique skeleton key, top of lock is fully removable.
