Stanton, TX - $20 1929 Ty. 1 The First NB Ch. # 8094
A better Series 1929 note from a small west Texas community located about one hundred miles south of Lubbock. The town was settled in the early 1880's by German Catholic immigrants, who christened their new home Marienfeld. Although advised by earlier settlers that ranching was the only reliable economic mainstay, the success of a demonstration farm during the colony's first couple of years lulled the newcomers into believing that agriculture could become an economic mainstay in west Texas. The drought of 1886 and 1887 took the colony by surprise, and, combined with a series of vicious blizzards during the winter of 1886, were enough to nearly destroy the the settlement, with most of the Germans moving away. In 1890, the town was renamed Stanton, after Lincoln's Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton. Very Good-Fine.
From The Rolling Plains Collection

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
