ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, August 22, 1883. Handwritten letter to his old friend, Colonel C. W. Woolley. In part: "We leave here on Friday for Boston—Mrs. Matthews and two of our daughters returning to Washington, Paul & I going to the Adirondacks, Prospect House, Blue Mountain Lake, Hamilton Co., N. Y." He states that he wrote to a mutual friend in the interest of reconciliation, but received no answer to the question. He concludes: "It is now, of course, too late. The mischief is already done, or gone so far that it can not be retrieved. I am very sorry it is so, as I see no good in it." A handwritten note, evidently by Woolley, is written on the facing page. In fine condition.
