1878, Ohio. Stock certificate of the Standard Oil Company. Signed as president by John D. Rockefeller and as secretary by Henry M. Flagler. Issued to John Huntington for 50 shares and endorsed by him on verso. John Huntington, born in England in 1832, came to Cleveland in 1854. He joined the oil refining firm of Clark and Payne in 1863. When the firm was absorbed by Standard Oil, Huntington received 500 shares of Standard Oil stock. He became one of the wealthiest men in Cleveland and his fortune continued to grow through interests in oil refining, shipping, mining, stone quarrying, and real estate. Huntington's interests in art developed after making a grand tour of Europe with his second wife. He built a summer estate in 1880 on 100 acres of land, now known as Huntington Reservation, part of the Cleveland Metroparks System. The park features the only public beach between Cleveland and Lorain, as well as the Huntington Playhouse, Baycrafters and Lake Erie Nature and Science Center. In the early 20th century, the construction of the electric railway between Cleveland and Toledo made Dover Township a popular summer retreat for wealthy Clevelanders. Among these new residents was John Huntington, a Standard Oil executive. His former property is now the Huntington Reserve of the Cleveland Metroparks. John Huntington died in 1893. His will created the John Huntington Art and Polytechnic Trust to provide for a free public art museum and a free evening polytechnic school. The John Huntington Fund For Education was created from this trust in 1953” This information on Huntington was taken from Cleveland Museum of Art website. Light red pen cancellation through Rockefeller and Flagler’s signature as is typical for this issue. Huntington’s bold signature remains uncancelled.
