St. Louis,MO - Independent City County - pre 1896 - Frisco Railway Union #10 Photograph :
This double matted Degler Studios photograph shows the workers and supporters of Union #10 of the Frisco Railway (St. Louis and San Francisco Railway). The "Frisco" was a Missouri Railway Company that incorporated in 1876 out of the physcial and financial ashes of another railway that had its beginnings in 1849. Frisco declared bankruptcy in 1896 and renamed itself the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad, but it's colloquial name remained Frisco. It traveled routes in the midwest and south until 1980 when it merged with the Burlington Northern Railroad. At the company's inception, it's goal was to expand westward as did the country. It's original outline for the company logo was traced from a coon's skin, sans the tail. The "Frisco Visitors" sign carried by one of the workers in the photo shows the logo. The photo measures 6 1/2" by 4 1/4" and with the matting it measures 9 7/8" by 7 7/8." The matting is coming apart and will need to be reattached. It shows wear at all of the corners. There are some slight nicks on all the edges. Written on the back in pencil is "Frisco Railway/workers/Local #10." The photo has some foxing; it is mainly concentrated in the lower left corner, but one can see a few spots in the upper and middle sections of the photo. It's focus is sharp. All of the worker's faces are clearly defined as are most of the signs. Noteworthy, the Local #10 had a baseball team, and two of it's players are on the far right of the photo. Unions in this era were extremely rare, so this photo will be of great interest to those who collect union memorabilia.
