The St. Louis Browns have often been viewed with a kindly notalgia that many of today’s Major League teams can only envy. Following the 1901 season, the Milwaukee Brewers, charter members of the American League moved to St. Louis and changed their name to the Browns. After a number of successful years at the gate, in 1916 owner Robert Hedges sold the team to Philip Ball. Ball had previously been involved in the Federal League and its problems and as a result of a settlement with Major League baseball, his purchase of the Browns was approved. One of Ball’s original investors in the team was Harry Sinclair of Sinclair Oil fame. The Browns went on to win only one pennant, finishing last 14 times and seventh 11 times. In 1953, the team was moved to Baltimore.
