1886, Illinois & Indiana. Stock certificate for 100 shares of the St. Louis, Alton & Terre Haute Railroad Company issued to and signed on verso by GEORGE FOSTER PEABODY. (1852 - 1938). Banker, Philanthropist. A meeting between Spencer Trask and Peabody led to the latter's becoming a partner in Spencer Trask & Co. in 1881 and by the 1890's they had become a leading investment banking firm financing numerous industries including railroads, sugar and electric lighting. In 1923, Peabody purchased the land at Warm Springs, Georgia and with Franklin D. Roosevelt developed the famed health center. It was Peabody who introduced the future president to Warm Springs.
