<td width="100%">
This is a late 18th- or early 19th-century Rosewood or Cherry wood hand-carved statue of St. John the Baptist bearing the Lamb of God wrapped in a blanket or carpet. This is the classical depiction of the first cousin of Jesus, who met his end when he met Salome. This statue comes from Provence in southern France and was probably carved in a monastery as there is a fantastic tradition of Religious woodcarving in the area. It has a wonderful Patina all over and there are approximately 20 wood worm holes (no longer active). There is lovely detail in the face and hair and the style of the hair also indicates late 18th century.
