Springfield trapdoor rifle .45-70 caliber, serial #173709. Stock cartouched SWP 1881. In fine to excellent original condition showing later arsenal added Buffington type rear sight. The rifle shows approx. 95-98% original arsenal blue finish, som slight losses on the bands and edges of the lock, and just beginning aging. The breech block shows 95% bright case hardening, the tang shows 90-95% case hardening, the hammer shows 75-80% quenched type case hardening. The stocks are fine to near excellent with a couple of minor storage marks and scratches. The groove along ramrod channel shows a couple of light dents, no losses. Original ramrod is retained. The triggerguard shows 75% dull original blue> The belly of the stock shows a sharp “P” inspector’s cartouche and small “J” inspector’s stamp, The buttplate shows 50% thinning blue, the markings are sharp, the action is tight, the bore is good to very good and may clean to excellent and shows some grease.
