Springfield model 1879 trapdoor carbine, .45-70 caliber, completely iron tacked with small sheet brass decorations in Indian style restitched carbine scabbard showing rawhide fringe. Serial #147669. The metal surfacesshow light to slightly heavy pitting and erosion. There are some large losses of wood around the lock area that are worn smooth from carry in these areas. There is some losses also in the area of the saddle ringbar on the left side of the frame and some areas of deep blood type pitting on the barrel. The metal surfaces show a dark patina with good lock markings. The saddle ring has been removed in Indian fashion. The bore isrough and has seen a lot of use. The stock is completely inlaid with metal studs or tacks which were at one time polished and now have gone to a dark patina. Many worn down significantly and some missing. The left side of the carbine shows sheet metal type decorations and there is a similar shaped copper decoration in front of the buttplate. The aging on the copper plates is consistent with the aging of the gun and we would state
