Indian Wars U.S. Springfield Model 1888 ''Ramrod Bayonet'' Trapdoor Rifle, #507371, .45-70 Gov't. cal., 32-5/8'' round barrel marked ''V/P/(eaglehead)/P'' and ''I'' at breech, and fitted with a block-blade front sight (serves as a bayonet lug) and Buffington rear sight (correctly marked ''R'', for Rifle); hinged breechblock (trapdoor) is marked ''U.S./Model/1884''; flat lockplate is marked ''(spread eagle)'' to left of ''U.S./Springfield'' beneath trapdoor latch; steel furniture including two spring-retained barrel bands (upper with stacking swivel), one-piece triggerguard (with sling swivel at front), buttplate with sliding door opening to butt trap for jointed cleaning rod (not present), is marked ''US'' on top tang, nose cap, and knurled steel ramrod bayonet; one-piece oil-stained walnut fullstock having a ''SWP/1890'' impressed inspector's cartouche (of Samuel W. Porter) opposite the lock. Mfg'd 1890. Condition is fine. Barrel, ramrod and mounting, barrel bands, lockplate and buttplate retain approx. 80% original military blue, blending with smooth brown patina; edges and markings are sharp; trapdoor breechblock and tang show mottled case colors. Stock is smooth and sound exhibiting only minor marks from military use and storage, with sharp inspector's mark. Action is strong and smooth; bore is shiny with distinct rifling. Est.: $600-$900.
