Springfield Model 1884 Carbine manufactured in 1889, this was the last year of production for the Trapdoor Carbine. The Carbine has a military blue barrel, barrel band, lock plate, trigger guard and buttplate. The receiver, breech block, tang and hammer are casehardened. The stock is oil-finished black walnut. The carbine has a Buffington rear sight marked "C" on the top of the leaf barrel band with grooved top to accommodate the rear sight leaf, late low arch breech block, hammer with stamped oval knurling on the spur, three notch tumbler, corrugated trigger, two-piece trigger guard, buttplate with oval trap and sling bar and ring on the left side of the stock wrist. The left side of the barrel is stamped with "V/P/Eagle Head/P" proof and inspection marks just ahead of the receiver. The breech block is roll-stamped "U.S./MODEL/1884 and the lock plate is stamped with the Springfield eagle and shield motif in front of the hammer followed by "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" in two lines. "U.S." is stamped on the heel of the buttplate behind the screw. The serial number "450462" is stamped on the top of the receiver in front of the tang. The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with the Ordnance final inspection mark which consists of the script initials "SWP" over the date "1889" surrounded by a rectangle with square corners. The encircled script "P" proofmark is not stamped in the usual location behind the trigger guard finial. A rack number "7" is stamped on the right side of the stock just in front of the buttplate.
BBL: 22 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 45-70 Government
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 450462
Condition:
Very fine as arsenal refurbished. The carbine retains 90% of the arsenal refurbished blue and 75% casehardened finish. The blue finish shows minimal handling and storage wear and the muted case colors are nearly all intact. All of the markings are extremely crisp. The double struck, slightly enhanced (recut) final inspection mark on the left side of the stock wrist is extremely sharp. The action functions perfectly. This is an excellent example of a very desirable Springfield Model 1884 carbine from the last year of production.
