Antique U.S. Springfield Model 1868 ''Allin'' Trapdoor Infantry Rifle, #42178, .50 CF cal., 32.5'' round barrel with block-blade front (doubles as bayonet lug) and long-range leaf rear sights, marked ''42178'' at breech; ''trapdoor'' breechblock is marked ''1870/(eagle head)/(crossed arrows)/US'' at hinge; beveled lockplate has ''(spread-wing eagle and shield)'' and ''U.S. Springfield'' below breech latch, ''1863'' behind hammer; iron furniture includes two spring-retained barrel bands (top with sling swivel), two-piece trigger guard with sling swivel at front, curved buttplate marked ''US'' at top screw, nosecap, and slotted button-tip ramrod with cannelures; one-piece oil-stained walnut fullstock. Mfg'd ca. 1868-72. Condition is very good. Metal surfaces show a clean and correct ''arsenal bright'' patina with clear markings. Stock lacks the left-side inspector's cartouche, appears to have been smoothed, re-stained and oiled having a very nice appearance; serial nos. correctly match at barrel and receiver. Action is crisp; bore is clean showing light black powder etching with sharp rifling. Est.: $600-$900. (Antique)
