Springfield Model 1855 Pistol Carbine, with Stock, Paper Cartridge, and Priming Tape, NVSN, .58 cal., 12'' barrel, finished in the white, walnut stock, brass hardware, and captive ramrod. Mfg'd by the Springfield Armory from 1855-1857. Lock features Maynard self-priming device, three-leaf rear sight, correct three-groove rifling, with approx. 4,020 mfg'd. Union Army's quarterly field reports, dated Dec. 31, 1862, report at least 400 pistol carbines were still in service and found in photographs with both Union and Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. Originally conceived for cavalryman as a pistol for horseback, but with the addition of the stock, troopers could use it for dismounted fighting. Lock is dated 1855 with Federal eagle to Maynard priming device cover, as well as ''U.S. Springfield''; bottom lower tang of stock with small numeral ''5''. This example stock is fitted with spring-loaded push-button type release. Condition is about fine with light carbon toning to bright surfaces and may have possibly been cleaned at one point. Pistol stock with horizontal fracture to right and left sides of pistol grip 1'' above pommel. Stock attachment remains in excellent condition with very light toning and minor discoloration to brass components. An old piece of leather or paper-like material has been added to the inside of cove to prevent marring of pistol. Complete with unopened roll of priming tape and one paper cartridge with pull-string intact. Est.: $3,000-$4,000. (Antique)
